Melissa and I work together at the same elementary school. She’s a Kindergarten teacher & LOVES her job! One afternoon, as I dropped off some of her students, she and I started talking about our husbands, and she shared with me an INCREDIBLE story!!

A story about fear, perseverance, the unknown, uncertainty, love, faith, courage…and everything in between!!

Kerrie was born and raised in the Caribbean Island of Barbados. A place of sparkling mix of Cyan, Azure, Sapphire and crystal blue waters. Soft, white sandy beaches, with an influx of honeymooners, vacationers and people looking to enjoy a Caribbean experience. A land of botanical gardens, a colonial past & the birthplace of rum.

Kerri and Melissa met when she was living in Clarksville, TN and he was stationed at Fort Campbell, KY. But before we talk about how they met, let me tell you how it all started…..

Kerrie was living in New York City, working for UPS. The date- September 11, 2001. A Tuesday morning he and thousands of others will never forget. A day permanently etched in his brain!

He was on his route when the first plane struck the north tower, and then the south tower. Chaos ensued. Dust an debris covered the ground, and everything around it. “I remember the panic and confusion…”

Kerrie made it back to his UPS facility safely, but not without a million questions running through his mind. He was stranded at his UPS facility for 2 days. After speaking to his family and making sure his loved ones were accounted for, he knew what he had to do. A decision he didn’t take lightly, or hesitate to make. He knew then and there what he was called to do.

Kerrie would take the necessary steps to renounce his Barbadian citizenship, become a United States citizen, and join the military to fight the war on terrorism!

After several tours overseas, Kerrie was again back on US soil where he was stationed at Ft. Campbell, KY.

One night, he and some friends decided to go dancing, and there he caught the eye of Melissa. She joked during their session about how he was the only one on the dance floor and she and her girlfriends were giggling at him. She soon realized, that he was having a great time, and she wanted to join in on the party! After a few dances, and several dates later, they knew they were inseparable! Fast forward to their wedding day, as as they say, the rest is history!!!

Dunbar Cave was one of the places Melissa and Kerrie would come to when they were dating to jog, hike, and just decompress. When she mentioned having their session there and its significance, I jumped at the chance!!

In the middle of July, the cool air coming from the cave was a welcome reprieve from the hot, humid, Tennessee summer!

Thank you Kerrie for the incredible sacrifice you made by giving up your citizenship to become a US citizen, and continuing to fight the war on terror!

To our military men and women…I extend my utmost gratitude!
