Spring break is a highly anticipated time for students to unwind, relax, and create lasting memories. Whether heading to a tropical destination or planning a staycation, prioritizing safety is essential to ensure a positive and enjoyable experience. In this guide, I’ll explore key spring break safety tips to help you maximize your vacation while keeping your well-being in mind.

  1. Do NOT Post in Real Time: I listed this one first because it is probably the most important. With social media and location tracking, you can’t be too safe. Monuments, markers, and local hangouts are easy to find, and you don’t want unwanted company or your safety at risk. Posting and location tagging in real-time lets people know where you are at ALL times. I’m not saying don’t snap pictures of you and your friends on the beach, (unless it’s an obvious location), but if you are at a popular spot, like the Bellagio Fountains in Las Vegas, or the Eiffel Tower in Paris, give yourself a few days, (or better yet, wait til you get home) to post and location tag.
  2. Plan Ahead: Before embarking on your spring break adventure, plan your trip thoroughly. Share your itinerary with family or friends, including details about your accommodation and travel arrangements. If traveling internationally, register with your embassy or consulate, contact your bank to let them know you are traveling so your bank cards aren’t declined, and/or get money in the countries currency, make sure you have correct outlet converters, your passport is not expired and stay informed about local guidelines and restrictions.
  3. Practice Sun Safety: If your spring break involves sunny destinations, protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Use sunscreen with a high SPF, wear a hat, and seek shade during peak sun hours. Reapply sunscreen regularly, especially after swimming, to ensure continuous protection against sunburn. If you do end up with a bad sunburn, take the proper precaution by applying ointments or creams that soothe your skin, and stay hydrated with electrolyte drinks. And keep an eye on it. Bad sunburns can turn into sun poisoning. If this happens, seek immediate medical attention.
  4. Stay Hydrated: Whether you’re basking in the sun on a beach or exploring new cities, staying hydrated is crucial. Pack a reusable water bottle and make a conscious effort to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Dehydration can lead to fatigue and other health issues, so prioritize your well-being by keeping hydrated. If chugging water just isn’t your thing, grab some Rayvi and swirl it in your bottle. It’s full of the good stuff like dehydrated coconut water, pineapple, & salt, and none of the yucky stuff like loads of sugar and artificial food dyes.
  5. Be Mindful of Alcohol Consumption: For many, spring break is synonymous with parties and socializing. If you choose to consume alcohol, do so responsibly. Stay within your limits, be aware of your surroundings, and never leave your drink unattended. If you do happen to leave your drink unattended, to sneak off to the restroom, or make a phone call, order a fresh one when you return. And don’t accept drinks from strangers. Keep an eye on your friends, and have a plan for getting back to your accommodation safely.
  6. Travel in Groups: Whether you’re exploring a new city or relaxing on the beach, traveling in groups enhances safety. Stick together with friends and communicate plans to avoid getting separated. This not only provides a sense of security but also adds to the enjoyment of shared experiences.
  7. Know Your Surroundings: Familiarize yourself with the local area and be aware of potential risks. Identify emergency exits, locate the nearest medical facilities, and save important contact numbers on your phone. Being proactive about your safety can contribute to a stress-free vacation.
  8. Secure Your Belongings: Protect your valuables by keeping them secure. Use a lock for your luggage, and consider investing in a small, portable safe for important documents, electronics, and other valuable items. Recently engaged & can’t wait to show off your sparkler? I suggest leaving your valuables at home & opting for a faux engagement ring. You won’t be heartbroken if you lose or damage jewelry from companies that produce pieces resembling the real thing. Make copies of your drivers license & passport if yours get lost or stolen. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash and use secure ATMs if needed. And don’t forget to toss an air tag in your luggage and *rental car to make sure you know where those are when you are traveling.
  9. Be Conscious of What You Post: Don’t want a picture from when you were 18 to haunt you when you are in the middle of a job interview? Be mindful of what images you post online. You may just have root beer in your red solo cup, but perception IS reality, and there’s no way you would be able to dispute it.
  10. Know Your Limits: Spring break is a time for fun and relaxation, but it’s essential to know your limits and prioritize your well-being. Listen to your body and take breaks when needed, whether it’s from physical activity, sun exposure, or socializing. Don’t feel pressured to participate in any activities that make you uncomfortable or compromise your safety.

Spring break is a time to unwind, explore, and create unforgettable memories with friends. By following these safety tips, you can enjoy your break responsibly and minimize the risk of accidents or mishaps. Remember to plan ahead, stay aware of your surroundings, use the buddy system, drink responsibly, practice safe sun exposure, stay connected, and know your limits. With careful preparation and responsible decision-making, you can make the most of your spring break while prioritizing your safety and well-being.

*Our rental car got stolen on vacation, so we never travel without an air tag in our rental.
